Dear Football Representative U12 Playing Season 2009/10 A significant number of clubs have contacted the Regional Office recently regarding the playing opportunities at the U12 age group across the South East Region. There currently exists the option to play 7-aside at the U12 age group in both East Lothian and the East of Scotland (ESSDA) Soccer Development Associations, as well as 11-aside with the South East Region Development 12s League in this Region. Clubs have been seeking advice as to which format is the most appropriate to the players at this age and stage of their development. At the meeting held on the 19th February 2009 the SFA Head of Youth Development (Neil Mackintosh) demonstrated the rationale for the small-sided game being the most appropriate game format for developing primary age children (ie. U12 age group) and provided the results from the significant research that has been conducted over the past few years for developing more technically gifted and game aware players. The Scottish FA have also launched the Developing Talent Plan which provides information on the technical, tactical, physical and psychological development of players by age and stage of their development. We would therefore like to reiterate that whilst the opportunity currently exists to play either 7-aside or 11-aside formats that the SFA Football Development Department recommendation is that the U12 age category should be the 7-aside game with alterations, including the introduction of the offside rule and pass-back rule amongst others which both ESSDA and ELSSDA are phasing in presently. The feedback that was received from the meeting on the 19th February was that there was indeed a lot of support from a number of the clubs (eg. Spartans, Hutchison Vale FC etc) ) for the U12 age group to continue at 7-aside with a more advanced format as mentioned above. In the meantime, if you have any queries please feel free to contact me at the address above. Yours sincerely, Mark Munro SFA Regional Manager (South East) |
